I start off by putting a wig cap with diamond holes in over my face – this may seem strange but going over this with a beauty blender with your eyeshadow colour really gives an awesome scale effect, perfect for this mermaid look. I used the shade Androgyny from the Jeffree Star Androgyny palette on an hourglass sponge and applied this to the areas I would usually contour and bronze, focusing the most colour where my cheekbone shadow would be. When you lift the cap off your face you can already see an incredible scale effect on the skin.
For blusher, I tried to match the peachy tones of my wig so I used this stunning blush from Laura Mercier* called Wild Flush and just applied this to my cheeks and cheekbones using an Eco Tools precision Blush brush*.
Moving onto my eyes, I wanted to keep this eye makeup simple to achieve as I didn’t want them to be the main focus of this makeup look. I start by blending Shell from the Lime Crime Venus palette* on a Zoeva 221 / Luxe Soft Crease brush and applying this to my crease blending it upwards for a base shade.
Then on the same brush I use Rebirth (from the Venus palette) and blend this over the top of the other colour, darkening up my crease. I also apply this on my outer corner, blending that into my crease.
Going back in with the shade Androgyny, the same shade we used to create those scales, I blend this using the same brush over into the crease and outer corner of my eye – giving my eyes a very subtle pinky, smokey effect. To elongate my eyes, I also drag the colour out using a clean(ish) 227 / Luxe Soft Definer brush*, not bringing it too far out but just enough to lift the eye.
To really make my eyes pop I wanted to use some intense shimmer – and these pigments from Peaches and Cream are probably one of the most beautiful pigments I have ever used! They are not only pigmented but they reflect beautiful shades when you hit different light points. I used the pigment Fantasy for this look as it was a white shadow with gorgeous purple reflects in it. I applied this to two thirds of my eyelid, blending it into the other shadows on a Zoeva 234* / Luxe Smoky Shader, also blending it from my inner corner up to my brows – giving that wide-eyed effect.
I further add this pigment to my cupids bow to really make it shine and make my lips appear bigger.
Because I really wanted my eyes to be glowing, I wanted to make the shadow even more intense, so over the top of the pigment on the first third of my eyelid I went over the pigment with the Lime Crime Diamond Crushers liquid lipstick in the shade Unicorn. This really made my eyelids pop with shimmer.
For mascara, I used the By Terry Terribly Mascara in the blue shade, trying to keep the mermaid theme with all parts of my makeup. I absolutely love this mascara, it really separates and gives lots of length to my lashes. Surprisingly I really like wearing blue mascara on a more everyday basis, it’s not too obviously blue and makes your lashes look amazing!
I start highlighting using the MAC Show Gold highlighter* on a Zoeva 105* / Luxe Highlight brush and apply this to all the high points of my face. I do love this highlighter and it gives you a beautiful glowy look, but I wanted the “wet” highlighted look. I went back in with my Fantasy pigment and used this as a highlighter. I was shocked by the results this gave me, it looks amazing as an intense highlight on your skin, perfect for the mythical look.
Priming my lips ready for lipstick, I’ve been loving the Hourglass Lip oil recently. It’s like an instant moisturiser for the lips and a perfect base to apply lipstick on top!
As always, I have to use a lipliner to define my lips and make them appear bigger. I absolutely love the NARS lipliners* because they are so easy to use and creamy – and they last a really long time too. For this tutorial, I used the shade El Agua which is a beautiful light mauve purple to match the crease colours on my eyeshadow.
My go-to lipstick at the moment has been the Lipstick Queen Velvet Rope Lipstick* in the shade Star System. These are the most stunning matte lipstick, they are so creamy and long lasting on the lips. I have not been able to stop using it since I got it. This shade goes with almost any makeup look because it’s literally the perfect pinky nude. Over the top of my lipstick, I went back in with the LimeCrime lip topper and applied this all over my lips.
Now for my favourite part of this tutorial, I found these gorgeous face gemstones from The Gypsy Shrine. I actually found them in my local TopShop and was obsessed the moment I saw them. There are so many different styles but I thought this one had the best mermaid vibes in my opinion. These would be perfect for festival glitter makeup too! I decided to cut mine into different sections as the whole upper piece didn’t fit with my eyebrow shape properly. I started off by applying 3 pieces, but later on adding two more to the right and left of my forehead.
Then to really give this look mermaid vibes, I thought I needed some pearls to bring it all together. Using eyelash glue and tweezers I applied two to the top of my nose connecting to my eyebrows and then 3 in a line on my chin. This was quite fiddly and took me a while to get them to stick where I wanted. I think it would be a lot easier if I wasn’t wearing false nails.
To finalise my eyes I run a beautiful green shimmer under my eyes from the Fenty Galaxy Palette on a Zoeva 230* / Luxe Pencil brush, then applying my Eyeluer 116 Natural Lashes*. Next, I put the NYX White Eye and Brow Pencil* in my water liner and then finish with the By Terry mascara on my bottom lashes.
For my last step, I took the Fantasy pigment once again and applied this to the centre of my lips to really make them glow. Not only did this make them seem bigger but it also gives them a beautiful glossy effect, without the gloss.
And that’s the finished look – it was actually really easy to create and didn’t take too long to achieve (apart from trying to apply the pearls with my long nails). I really hope some of you re-create this look because it was a lot of fun and looks absolutely stunning with the gemstones and pearls.
My wig is from www.lushwigs.com and is the style Camisole. This wig is amazing quality and looks so good on too. Putting on wigs is not a strong point for me and I have only done it a couple of times with this wig. I think when my hair was down it really did look like my hair and I have had many compliments on how real it looks, especially on photos! Perfect if you are like me and want wigs for different makeup looks. This website has a wide range of beautiful high-quality wigs and at an incredible price too – be sure to check them out!
