Having a small room definitely isn’t the easiest place to work in, especially when it comes to storage and using your space wisely. I used to sit on the floor in front of a long mirror to do my makeup, and I had all my makeup stored under my bed. This wasn’t the most comfortable or any good for my back, especially if I wanted to do creative makeup – where your sat there for a few hours.
A makeup desk and storage area may not be essential to everyone but for me this was probably one of the best purchases I have ever made – when your passion is makeup you need somewhere comfortable to do it. For the space I have in my room I think I did a good job using the space efficiently to create a cute makeup set up, which I can also use as a desk to do my work (or play games).
I wanted to create this space in as little money as possible as I didn’t have a lot at the time. The desk and drawers I purchased both from IKEA, this would probably be the best place to pick up your makeup storage as it is inexpensive-ish (depending on your budget) and it also has a wide selection of furniture that can fit into any area.
My drawer unit contains five drawers, two smaller draws at the top and three larger towards the bottom. Inside I used trays I purchased from Lakeland – which where very cheap and where perfect for items such as powders and lipsticks.
The desk itself has a large desk pulling out and this is where I store my makeup palettes. Its very satisfying connecting them together like a jigsaw puzzle finding the best positions for them all to fit nicely. My bottom drawers where just about the perfect size for my other beauty tools, such as my hair products and tools. I also have my skincare in one of the larger drawers.
I big problem with my room is the lighting is not great, especially if I’m getting ready for a night out later in the evening. I decided my best option and the least space consuming was to get an illuminating mirror which hung on my wall. This was perfect for doing my makeup and hair, it gives the perfect amount of even light to my face.
I can’t remember the exact website I ordered my mirror from but websites such as Soak.com they have the same sort of mirrors in lots of different sizes. I personally love the Hollywood style mirrors, which I would have loved to got but at the time I didn’t have the funds – maybe in the future when I want to upgrade my makeup set up.
To finish my set up off I thought a few decorations where needed to help make it feel cozy and a relaxing space to work in. Plants are my favourite addition to this area. I used to like working in the summer house because it was in the garden, so I bought the garden indoors. I also added some fairy lights and flowers around the area to give it that Tumblr vibe.
My brushes are stored in jars and a desk organiser pot I purchased from Hobbycraft. Putting your brushes into cute recycled jars I personally think looks really cute, and also gives that slight shabby chic vibe. For when I’m working I like to feel relaxed, there’s nothing better than a beautiful smelling candle to keep you calm – having the space to put one is really nice!
